Mapping my run on the snowy banks

Much to my disappointment, I have not been able to run outside for the past two days. The first snow of the season left the streets slushy, icy, and wet, with huge banks of snow on the corners. I actually ran on the treadmill, which is a poor substitute for an outdoor run.

To honor my love of running while the sun rises, I posted this map yesterday morning on the Boerum Hill bulletin board. As you can tell, it was not yet light out.

I was disappointed to discover that my two previous maps had been removed. Where did they go? Who took them?

I need to find a more permanent space for my maps. I am working on reaching out to arts organizations that help artists produce public projects. I applied for a slot to talk to some of the administrators of Creative Time, a NYC-based non-profit that produces public art projects. The next one-on-one artist counseling sessions are being held at PS1 in January. I have no idea what my chances are of being picked for a meeting, but I am excited about the possibility.

  2. Thanks for the comments.

Jonathan, there are more maps posted on this blog in November.

I checked out your Boerum Hill blog -- looks like fun! I LOVE the neighborhood--I've been here for more than 8 years.

  3. I wonder if you could contact a local free paper that likes to highlight unique things that artist are doing and share your maps that way? At least maybe they would credit your work as art and draw interest to your project. If they would not be interested ask them what might perk their interest in your love of your neighborhood and art or what kind of articles they are looking for.

Just a thought. My husband works in the media so I am trying to think outside the box here a little.

  4. Thanks, Quilt Architect, for the marketing suggestions. I will look into local newspapers. Some friends in Brooklyn recommended that I check out running magazines, too. I think that's my next step.

I want these maps to live outside to carry the spirit of why I love being outside...but having them gain exposure in some kind of publication would be wonderful.

There is also FiberArts magazine, which published some of my embroidered artwork in the past. They might be interested in this project...I have to think about all the potential venues.

  5. could you embroider them on felt and then sew onto or attach to knit graffiti? Sometimes I attach messages this way :) Harder for people to remove.

  6. JafaBrit, I am not sure I understand the process you're describing. Can you elaborate?
